Statement of the Chinese Embassy Regarding the Concern and Support from the Philippines to the Earthquake Stricken Area in China
Shortly after the powerful earthquake in Southwest China’s Sichuan province on May 12, 2008 which has caused tremendous casualties and property losses, Filipino friends from different walks of life have expressed through the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines their condolences, sympathies, support and willingness to help to the quake victims and their families. H.E. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo sent a letter of condolences to H.E. President Hu Jintao and has ordered the deployment of a medical team to the quake area. Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alberto Romulo has sent a letter to Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi expressing sympathies and support. Senator Richard Gordon, Chairman of the Philippine National Red Cross has offered his condolences in his letter to H.E. Ambassador Song Tao and filed a resolution expressing sympathies to the earthquake area at the Senate. The Filipino-Chinese Community has also extended their great concern and support to the victims and their families and many other Philippine friends have expressed their concern in different ways.
We are deeply touched by the kindness and friendly sentiments of the Philippine people to the people of the quake-stricken area and the Chinese People as a whole. It fully demonstrates that our two peoples are not only good neighbors and friends, but also good brothers and relatives. On behalf of the Chinese Government and people, we would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to the Philippine leaders and people who have expressed their condolences, sympathies, concern, support and willingness to help.
The Chinese Embassy has conveyed the friendly sentiments of the Philippine people to the Chinese Government and people immediately. We are also making close contacts with the relevant government agencies of China so that the kindness and support of the Philippines will reach the earthquake area as soon as possible. We believe, under the strong leadership of the Chinese Government, and with the concerted efforts of the Chinese people and great support from the international community including the Philippines, the people in the quake-stricken area will overcome the difficulties and reconstruct their homeland as soon as possible.
